An Evening With Dr. George Varghese – Prevention of Sports Injuries

Aster Al Raffah Hospital, Ghubra organized a health awareness talk aimed at educating athletes and sports enthusiasts about possible sports injuries and the various medical techniques to combat them. The talk was held at Crowne Plaza Hotel on 16th January, 2018

Dr. George Varghese, Visiting Specialist Orthopedic surgeon at Aster Al Raffah Hospital, Ghubra led the talk on various sports injuries that could be caused due to lack of proper awareness and care while playing the sport. Given the popularity of football in the Sultanate of Oman, Dr. George laid emphasis on the types of injuries caused while playing the sport and the new and improved ways of medical management.

The informative talk session was graced by the presence of Ms. Nadia Ahmed Al Balushi, Goodwill Ambassador of Oman as the Chief Guest. The talk session was attended by over 300 participants including sports club members, coaches and physiotherapists.

While enlightening sports enthusiasts about means to maximize performance without injuries, Dr. George Varghese said, “Sports injuries are very common these days because there is a segment of the population, particularly children and young adults who are adopting increasingly active lifestyles. The most common reason for cause of sports injuries in the lack of sufficient knowledge about the fitness and prevention strategies relating to each sport. In today’s time and age it is definitely challenging to stay updated with matters that on a daily basis are irrelevant to the sport, however it is the need of the hour for every athlete, professional or amateur to be aware of injuries that could be caused in their respective sport in order to take the necessary measures in case of a need. The ultimate beneficiary always has to be the athlete.”

The informative session also included testimonials from patients who underwent treatment and care under Dr. George Varghese, who testified and reiterated Dr. George’s proficiency and skill within his field of expertise.

In his talk Dr. George mentioned the various types of sport injuries including bruises, cuts, concussions, sprains, strains and fractures. He also shed light upon the suggestive first aid measures that should be taken for immediate treatment for these conditions. Dr. George also emphasized that sports injuries are not caused only in those who actively play sports but also in individuals who engage in a sudden surge of activity like running or biking.
